What is a Paralegal? Paralegals are professionals who are trained to assist lawyers with various tasks. Paralegal duties place considerably more demands than secreterial responsibilities, and include a broad range of substantial legal work.  Paralegals are often required to manage cases, conduct factual and background legal research,  work with clients, and draft legal documents. Many paralegals are often involved in exciting and challenging assignments that may otherwise have been performed by lawyers themselves.

Paralegals, however, do not have the authority to provide legal services directly to the clients, with the exception of specific situations as stipulated by legal regulations. Lawyers’ services can often be delievered more effectively and economically with the use of paralegals’ assistance. Paralegals, who are also referred to as legal assistants, are often required to work under pressure. They can effectively gather and manage extensive amounts of data and aid the lawyers in producing better quality services in a shorter period of time.

Most paralegals spenda lot of  their time  doing research at their computer o in a legal library. Paralegal employed by law firms, typically enjoy nice offices and pleasant surroundings. Government employed paralegals often work in small cubicles or share office space with others.

What is a Paralegal Required to Do?

One of the most important skills necessary for becoming a successful paralegal are excellent oral and written communication skills. Precision in language is of great importance. Paralegals are often required to think on their feet, and give or write a presentations in a clear, concise and grammatically correct format.  Computer skills are very important, and in particular knowledge of the Microsoft Office products,  as well as fast typing and good organizational abilities.

Paralegal salary will often depend on the extent of one’s training, on the job experience and level of expertise.

Paralegals are often required to be certified or accredited. There are many paralegal training programs available online, as well as at regular colleges and universities. Students participating in these programs often study the topics of litigation, torts,  legal research and writing,  contracts, Lexis, and legal applications.
